WORK THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Perhaps you’re the type of person who has always enjoyed working with your hands and digging in the dirt. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to work on projects with a bigger focus than the individual—projects with significant societal benefits. For whatever reason, you may be suited for working with us on some truly amazing things.

The Ohio River Tunnel Project
This project will reduce sewer overflows via a tunnel and storage system located along the Ohio River in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The project consists of a 51 million gallon capacity deep tunnel and an integrated deep pump station, designed to capture overflow and send it to the existing sewer system for treatment at the Water Quality Treatment Center. And best of all, this project will protect the sensitive Ohio River Valley from sewage overflow during heavy rains and flood conditions.

Dig Indy Tunnel Project
This project includes about 20 miles of 20-foot diameter finished tunnel running from 120 feet to 180 feet below surface with seven large-diameter shafts and 30 drop-shafts. Like the Ohio River Valley project, Dig Indy is being built to alleviate the flow of sewer water to the White River in downtown Indianapolis. Also included are several near surface structures consisting of sewer conveyance pipes as well as live tie-ins. The project follows the existing water ways and winds through the downtown area as well as the suburbs. These CSO tunnels are mandated by the Clean Water Act and designed to clean up the water in the Midwest.

BUILDING ON HISTORY

The roots of J.F. Shea Construction go back to 1881 when its founder, John Francis Shea, started an ambitious plumbing company in Portland, Oregon. As Portland grew, so too did the plumbing company, expanding its scope into pipelines and infrastructure projects like the Portland Seawall, sewers and tunnels. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the company worked on many of the country’s largest and most challenging engineering projects—the Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the California Aqueduct to name a few.

Now in its fourth generation of family leadership, J.F. Shea Construction, Inc. has continued its portfolio of milestone projects through the latter half of the 20th century. Partnering with other civil engineering firms, we have played an important role in the development of underground public transit systems in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York City. Pioneering new methods for tunneling, including the TBM and one-pass concrete lining, the company has helped move people and water throughout the country. J.F. Shea Construction also has vast experience in building facilities that treat, store and convey water, including work on ocean water desalination plants. With the experience that comes with 135 years of landmark projects, J.F. Shea Construction continues to build on its incredible legacy.
